Im Young Woong Addresses DM Controversy at Concert

Singer Im Young Woong has finally spoken out about the recent DM controversy, three weeks after it first emerged. Although his apology was indirect, public reaction remains largely negative.

On December 27, Im Young Woong held the first performance of his solo concert 'Im Young Woong Recital (RE:CITAL)' at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul. During his opening remarks, he expressed, "I sincerely apologize for causing you concern and worry. I want to take this opportunity to convey my heartfelt apologies."

This statement was a subtle reference to the DM controversy that erupted on December 7. At that time, citizens were in turmoil due to a state of emergency, calling for the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol while Im Young Woong posted a celebratory message for his dog, Siwol's birthday, which drew criticism from some netizens.

One user sent him a DM saying, "What are you doing in this situation? I don't expect you to speak out, but this is really insensitive," to which Im Young Woong replied, "What? Am I a politician? Why should I speak out?" This exchange sparked controversy, and while initial claims of it being fabricated arose, the authenticity was confirmed through the poster's verification and the silence from both Im Young Woong and his agency.

The public's disappointment in Im Young Woong was palpable. While there is no obligation for celebrities to express political views, it is clear that they should be cautious with their words and actions, especially regarding sensitive issues. Many felt that his response only exacerbated the situation. Furthermore, as other idols and actors began to express support for impeachment, Im Young Woong found himself being compared unfavorably.

After maintaining silence throughout the controversy, Im Young Woong finally apologized to his fans during the concert, stating, "This has been a time of learning for me. I am a singer, and my role is to bring joy and comfort through my music. I will strive to show a more developed version of myself in the future."

Approximately 20,000 fans in attendance responded with applause, reinforcing their support for him. Despite the ongoing criticism, his apology likely strengthened the bond with his dedicated fanbase.

However, the public's response to his apology remained cold. His emphasis on being "a singer" seemed to clash with his earlier dismissive DM response, leading many to accuse him of trying to engage in a power struggle with the public.

Criticism also arose regarding the venue of his apology. Since the DM controversy began on December 7, Im Young Woong had not communicated through any public channels, including his official accounts. Following the DM leak, many expressed shock and disappointment, yet he offered no clarification or apology, and even his agency maintained silence. The only place he chose to express his stance was at a concert attended solely by fans.

While Im Young Woong's fanbase primarily consists of middle-aged individuals, the ticketing process has been dubbed a 'filial piety war,' with their children fiercely competing to secure tickets. This dynamic has led to increased public interest in Im Young Woong, even among those who are not fans, contributing to his positive public image. Consequently, many in the general public view him favorably and support him, indicating that his status and reputation are the result of accumulated public interest.

Despite this, Im Young Woong has drawn a clear line. After his formal apology, he continued with the concert, and as of now, he has not issued any official statements. Some fans, disappointed by his apparent focus on his fanbase, have begun to distance themselves from him.

Importantly, many of the children who participated in the 'filial piety war' for ticketing have now declared a "ticketing strike." While this may not immediately impact his sales, the shift from being hailed as 'Im Hero' to being dismissed as 'Im Who?' has severely damaged his public image. If goodwill turns to dislike and dislike to indifference, it could quickly erode the solid popularity he once enjoyed.
