Im Hyung-joo Reveals His Millionaire Journey at Just 20 Years Old

Im Hyung-joo, known as the 'living legend of popera,' made headlines by revealing the story behind becoming a millionaire at the age of 20, along with his accumulated earnings for the first time on television. In the episode of 'Neighbor Millionaire' (서장훈의 이웃집 백만장자), aired on June 25, the popera singer shared insights into his hidden life and financial success.
Viewers were astonished to learn that Im had already joined the ranks of millionaires by the age of 20. He humorously stated, "Why did I decide to appear? I think I have the right to be here since I became a millionaire at 20."
Im Hyung-joo made history as the first Korean artist to sign with one of the four major global record labels and, in 2003, became the second artist in Korea to earn over 100 million won per performance, following soprano Jo Sumi. His impressive career, which includes numerous international performances, album sales, and concert revenues, showcases him as more than just a wealthy entertainer but as a cultural asset.
MC Seo Jang-hoon speculated that, conservatively estimating his earnings from record contracts, performance fees, and the number of shows, Im has likely earned over 500 billion won, leaving the studio in awe.
Im's luxurious mansion also drew attention. The four-story popera house, spanning approximately 400 pyeong, overlooks the scenic Mountain View in Seoul and features spaces reminiscent of a performance venue, including a stage, dressing room, and high-end kitchen, all reflecting his identity as a musician.
Im Hyung-joo first captured public attention at the age of 17 when he sang the national anthem at the inauguration of the late President Roh Moo-hyun. He has since achieved global recognition, performing at Carnegie Hall, receiving the Obama Presidential Volunteer Service Award, and having a special audience with Pope Francis.
Viewers of the broadcast expressed their admiration, commenting, "This is what a true millionaire looks like," "I had no idea Im Hyung-joo was this successful," and "It's even more impressive that he built his wealth through his own talent."
