On May 22, industry sources and law enforcement reported that the Seoul Suseo Police have recently sent an individual, referred to as A, to the prosecution on charges of defamation and insult under the Information and Communications Network Act. This action follows a complaint filed by HYBE last year, which claimed that videos posted on YouTube channels such as PeopleBox and DaIssue maliciously defamed the company and its artists.

HYBE has argued that the content in question was part of a deliberate effort to undermine specific companies and artists through reverse-viral tactics. Two journalists from an online media outlet have been sentenced to prison for extorting over 30 million won from local governments in South Korea. On May 22, the Daegu District Court's Pohang branch, presided over by Judge Park Hyun-sook, sentenced the two reporters, identified as A and B, to 10 months in prison, suspended for three years, for their involvement in extortion. 

The court found that in July 2023, A threatened the local government of Yeongdeok-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, stating that if they did not pay advertising fees, he would publish negative articles about them, resulting in a payment of 1.1 million won. 

In addition to threatening to write disparaging articles, the journalists also coerced local governments by claiming they would file extensive requests for information unless they received payment. B extorted 4 million won from Pohang City between February 2020 and July 2022 by threatening to submit numerous information requests. Similarly, A received 6.9 million won from Yeongdeok-gun after filing seven information requests from March 2022 to April 2023. 

The two journalists shared their tactics and, from March 2022, submitted eight information requests to Pohang City, ultimately receiving 11.7 million won before retracting their requests. Judge Park noted that while the nature of their crimes was serious, the fact that A and B made efforts to return the money and restore the victims was taken into consideration during sentencing.

He emphasized that strict penalties would be imposed for any legal violations. Speaking at the 'Personal Information Policy Forum' held at the Bank Hall in Jung-gu, Seoul, Koh pointed to SK Telecom's failures as the primary cause of the breach. "Customers trusted the company (SK Telecom) while using its services, only to become victims of this incident. The damage has already been immense, and the company failed to prevent it," he stated. 

Koh criticized SK Telecom's notification process regarding the data breach, calling it "delayed and inadequate," expressing significant regret over the situation. On May 2, the commission had ordered SK Telecom to inform all potentially affected customers by May 9. However, the company only communicated the breach to its customers on that date. 

Koh noted, "The fact that SK Telecom did not notify customers until then is a major issue, and the information provided was passive and in some cases violated the Personal Information Protection Act. We deemed the notification insufficient and sent an official letter to SK Telecom regarding this matter." 

Regarding claims that North Korea or China may be behind the hacking, he remarked, "It is often difficult to confirm the perpetrators behind hacking incidents. There are traces of information from the server being transferred to an IP address in Singapore, but identifying who controls that IP is challenging. International cooperation is necessary." 

As for whether the hacked personal data has been leaked on the dark web, Koh stated, "Nothing has been discovered yet, but monitoring remains difficult." The dark web is known for being a hub for various cybercrimes, accessible only through specific software. 

Koh also warned of potential secondary damages beyond just cloned phones, indicating that various forms of harm could arise. "We are continuously monitoring the situation," he added.
