High School Student Sentenced for Sexual Assault and Live Streaming Incident

A high school student, identified as A (17), has received a lengthy prison sentence for the sexual assault and confinement of a peer in a motel, which he broadcast live on social media. On January 17, 2025, the Daejeon High Court upheld the original sentence of 10 years in prison, with a minimum of 7 years to be served, for violations of child and youth sexual protection laws and assault.

The incident occurred in the early hours of October 14, 2023, when A and an accomplice allegedly confined and assaulted a girl, referred to as B, at a motel in Daejeon. During the assault, A streamed the events live on social media and is also facing charges for forcibly touching another female student.

The appellate court stated, "The evidence presented in the first trial supports the victim's credibility, and there are no grounds to question her testimony." The court also noted that the sentencing was consistent with the severity of the crime, which involved multiple offenders and a particularly heinous nature of the sexual violence.

In the initial ruling, the court described A's actions as extremely serious, resulting in the same 10-year maximum sentence and a 7-year minimum. Additionally, A was ordered to complete 40 hours of sexual violence treatment and is prohibited from working with children and disabled individuals for 10 years.
