High School Apologizes for Controversial Quiz Question at Festival

A high school in Bucheon, South Korea, has issued an apology after a quiz question posed during a festival was interpreted as mocking protests against the transition to co-education at Dongduk Women's University. On January 8, the school held a quiz show that included a question asking participants to select the 'most useless movement' from a list that included significant historical events and social movements, such as the March 1st Movement, the Black Civil Rights Movement, the Feminist Movement, the Candlelight Protests, and the protests against the co-education transition at Dongduk Women's University. The quiz sparked outrage online, with critics arguing that it belittled the Dongduk protests and feminist movements. In response to the backlash, the school released a statement on its website expressing regret to those hurt by the quiz. The school explained that the quiz questions were not pre-screened to maintain the element of surprise, despite the teacher's attempts to review them. They emphasized that the intention was not to criticize or demean any specific movement or the students of Dongduk Women's University. The school also committed to ongoing education on gender equality, gender sensitivity, and the prohibition of hate speech. Meanwhile, students at Dongduk Women's University have recently made headlines for occupying the campus and damaging property in protests against the transition to co-education.
