After an eight-year hiatus, actress Han Chae-young is making her much-anticipated return to the big screen in the sociopathic thriller 'City of Evil' (악의 도시), which is also the directorial debut of actor Hyun Woo-sung. The film is set to be released in June 2025, and a gripping teaser poster has just been unveiled.
In 'City of Evil', Han Chae-young plays the role of Yoo-jung, a character who believes in goodwill, while the story also features Kang-soo (played by Jang Yi-soo), who rejects trust, and Sun-hee (portrayed by Hyun Woo-sung), who manipulates others. The film explores the depths of human nature through a catastrophic relationship where survival hinges on killing or being killed.
The newly released teaser poster showcases a striking composition of the main characters, with ominous silhouettes surrounding Yoo-jung, hinting at the brutal fate that awaits her. The varied expressions and gazes of the characters create a sense of uncertainty about who can be trusted, while the tagline "If you can't escape, kill" foreshadows the horrific conspiracies and betrayals that will unfold.
Yoo-jung, a star instructor, meets the charming businessman Sun-hee through a mutual acquaintance. As Sun-hee continuously expresses his affection, Yoo-jung begins to feel overwhelmed and tries to distance herself. However, a single night of misjudgment turns her life upside down. Following that night, Sun-hee's demeanor shifts dramatically, plunging Yoo-jung into a state of fear. Meanwhile, her younger brother Kang-soo senses something sinister about Sun-hee and starts to keep a close watch on their relationship. As the true nature of evil begins to surface, the tension escalates, leaving audiences eager to see how the catastrophic dynamics among the three characters will unfold. The film also addresses real-life issues such as stalking, dating violence, and gaslighting, raising social awareness about these pressing crimes.
'City of Evil' marks Han Chae-young's return to the screen after her role in 'Neighbor Star' eight years ago. Known as the original 'Barbie Doll' of Korean entertainment, she has showcased a wide range of acting skills in dramas like 'Cinderella Sister', 'My Fair Lady', and 'Boys Over Flowers', as well as films such as 'Wildcard' and 'The Outlaws'. In this film, she will portray Yoo-jung, a character symbolizing the goodness in humanity. Hyun Woo-sung, who has gained recognition through various dramas including 'Yellow Revenge' and 'Woman of Storm', is making his directorial debut while also taking on the lead role as the villain Sun-hee, promising a bold transformation from his previous image. He will depict a character who reveals a completely different face after a single night with Yoo-jung, showcasing the extremes of human nature. Additionally, Jang Yi-soo, known for his roles in 'Queen of Masks' and 'Erase Bad Memories', joins the cast as Kang-soo, Yoo-jung's brother and ally, completing the intense psychological battle among the three characters.
