GOT7's Yugyeom and El Capitan Share Their Aspirations for 'Universe League'

On November 19, 2024, at the SBS headquarters in Mokdong, Seoul, GOT7's Yugyeom (유겸) and El Capitan (엘 캐피탄) discussed their strategies for leading the Beat Team in the new SBS variety show, 'Universe League' (유니버스 리그). They expressed their desire to help the contestants develop long-lasting careers in music, stating, "We taught them with the hope that they would be able to pursue their singing careers for a long time."

'Universe League' serves as the boy group counterpart to the massive girl group audition program 'Universe Ticket' (유니버스 티켓). Directed by PD Lee Hwan-jin (이환진), who also helmed the previous season, the show aims to discover the next generation of global boy group talent.

What sets this program apart is its league format, as indicated by its title. Unlike traditional audition shows where trainees compete individually, 'Universe League' features team-based competitions, which has already garnered significant attention. A total of three teams will participate, but only one will achieve their dream of debuting and performing on stages worldwide.

As the director of the Beat Team, Yugyeom emphasized the uniqueness of his team, saying, "The Beat Team is distinctive. I want to share everything I’ve learned with my friends. While I want to win the audition program, my ultimate hope is for these friends to have long careers as singers. I want to provide them with insights on how to survive in this industry. I believe that consistent practice and repetition are key to improvement, and it shows on stage. I’m making an effort to communicate details as much as possible."

El Capitan added, "I come from the audition program 'K-pop Star' (위대한 탄생) and have experience in idol group activities. Now, I’m working as a producer. When I see these friends, I feel like they are walking the same path I did. I want to support them and help them shine even more. I’m sharing my experiences as a producer, and I definitely feel a strong sense of responsibility in this role."
