Former Soccer Star Song Jong-kook Embraces Van Life Amid Controversy

Former South Korean national soccer player Song Jong-kook, known for his role in the 2002 FIFA World Cup semi-finals, has shared his current lifestyle living in a camper van for the past four years. While he enjoys a life of freedom, he faces scrutiny due to past allegations of unpaid child support from his ex-wife, Park Yeon-soo.

On July 20, Song appeared on MBN's (MBN) show 'Altoran,' where he discussed his unconventional living situation. Once celebrated for receiving a luxury car as a reward for his World Cup achievements, he now resides in a camper trailer instead of an apartment, sparking curiosity among fans.

His camper van, located near a small reservoir in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, is valued at approximately 70 million won. Although the living space is only about 20 square meters, Song expressed satisfaction, stating, "The yard is larger than 300 pyeong (approximately 1,000 square meters)." He also mentioned that living in the camper is more comfortable than living in an apartment, emphasizing his desire for a free and easy lifestyle.

Song's daily routine includes a simple breakfast of apples and soybean milk, followed by about an hour and a half of maintaining a lawn as large as a soccer field. He also works as a youth soccer coach, guiding children in the sport, and enjoys hosting barbecues with guests at his camper, showcasing his culinary skills by preparing ramen and pork belly.

However, his current lifestyle contrasts sharply with the controversy surrounding his past. After divorcing Park Yeon-soo in 2015, she has been the primary caregiver for their daughter, Song Ji-a, and son, Song Ji-wook. Last year, Park publicly accused Song of failing to pay child support through her social media, shocking many. She shared a post featuring a character holding a yellow card, stating, "I only asked him to keep one promise made in front of the law for the children..." She later clarified that this referred to child support, expressing her frustration by saying, "I have endured this more than a hundred times. Please just keep your promise."

This ongoing controversy casts a shadow over Song Jong-kook's pursuit of a carefree life in his camper van, leaving many to reflect on the complexities of his situation.
