Former President Yoon Suk-yeol's Departure Banned Amid Insurrection Investigation

On June 25, it was confirmed that former President Yoon Suk-yeol is prohibited from leaving the country as part of an ongoing investigation into charges of insurrection and foreign exchange violations. The special investigation team handling the insurrection case has requested the Ministry of Justice to impose a travel ban on Yoon after receiving the case from the police and the prosecution's emergency martial law investigation unit. Previously, in December of last year, the prosecution and the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials (공수처) had also sought a travel ban against Yoon, which was subsequently approved by the Ministry of Justice. Typically, investigative agencies implement travel bans to prevent suspects from fleeing abroad during ongoing investigations. These bans can be extended on a monthly basis, and in cases where criminal trials are underway, the Ministry of Justice can request a travel ban for up to six months. Yoon has been under indictment since January 26 on charges of being the leader of an insurrection and is currently facing trial.
