Former Marine Corps Commander Denies Allegations of Misconduct

On July 2, former Marine Corps 1st Division Commander Lim Seong-geun completed a four-hour questioning session with the special investigation team looking into allegations of external pressure in the investigation of a deceased Marine. After the session, he stated, "There is not a single suspicion regarding the lobbying for my acquittal."

Lim was questioned about charges of negligent homicide related to the death of Corporal Chae Soo-geun during a search operation in Yecheon, North Gyeongsang Province, in July 2023. He is also implicated in allegations that individuals involved in stock manipulation attempted to lobby First Lady Kim Geon-hee on his behalf.

Emerging from the investigation, Lim noted that he had provided substantial evidence to the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials and had previously spoken with the police, leading him to selectively respond to questions during the inquiry. He emphasized his constitutional right to refuse to testify, stating, "Anyone can exercise their right to refuse to answer."

Regarding the lobbying allegations, he asserted, "In the areas I am aware of, I have no suspicions whatsoever," but acknowledged he could not comment on the activities of others involved.

A representative from the special investigation team indicated that Lim had largely refused to answer questions concerning the negligent homicide charges while providing some information on other allegations. They plan to schedule additional questioning in the future.
