Former Lawmaker Yoon Kwan-seok Granted Parole Amid Corruption Scandal

Yoon Kwan-seok, a former member of the National Assembly, is set to be released on parole after serving time for his involvement in the 'Democratic Party Money Envelope' scandal. According to reports, the Ministry of Justice held a parole review committee on June 23 and deemed Yoon eligible for release. He will be freed on June 30, approximately 1 year and 10 months after being indicted on charges of violating party laws in August 2023. Under current law, individuals sentenced to imprisonment can be considered for parole after serving one-third of their sentence.

Yoon was charged in May 2021 for allegedly providing 60 million won in cash to campaign officials to support the election of former party leader Song Young-gil ahead of the Democratic Party's convention. His two-year prison sentence was confirmed by the Supreme Court in October of last year.

Additionally, Yoon faces further charges for distributing cash envelopes to fellow lawmakers and received a nine-month prison sentence with a two-year probation in the first trial, which is currently under appeal. He is also on trial for allegedly accepting a bribe of around 20 million won from a businessman in exchange for legislative favors. Although he was acquitted in the first trial in April, the prosecution has appealed, and the second trial is ongoing.
