Former First Lady Kim Geon-hee Under Investigation Amid NATO Controversy

Kim Geon-hee, the former First Lady of South Korea, was seen waiting in line to vote at the 3rd polling station in Seocho-gu, Seoul. On the afternoon of July 25, Jeong Ji-won, a former administrative officer in the presidential office and part of Kim's close circle, appeared at the special prosecutor's office in Jongno-gu for questioning by the Min Jung-ki special investigation team.
The special prosecutor's office is investigating various allegations that arose during former President Yoon Suk-yeol and his wife's attendance at the NATO summit in June 2022. They have been summoning former administrative officials who assisted Kim Geon-hee for questioning.
One key focus of the investigation is the circumstances surrounding a civilian, identified as Shin, who accompanied the couple and boarded the presidential plane upon their return. Shin is the wife of Lee Won-mo, who was the personnel secretary at the time.
Additionally, the special prosecutor's office is looking into a luxury necklace that Kim Geon-hee wore during the NATO visit, which was not reported in her asset declaration. They are currently trying to determine the ownership of the item.
