Former Defense Minister Lee Jong-seop Under Investigation for Alleged Interference in Marine Corps Case

On July 10, 2025, the Marine Corps Special Investigation Team conducted a search of the residence of former Defense Minister Lee Jong-seop, a key suspect in the alleged interference in the investigation of the death of Marine Corporal Chae Soo-geun. This marks the first search of Lee since the allegations surfaced in July and August 2023.
Additionally, searches are ongoing for former Public Integrity Secretary Lee Si-won and former Defense Secretary Lim Gi-hoon, who are suspected of being involved in the process of retrieving investigation records from the Marine Corps.
According to legal sources, the Special Investigation Team targeted Lee's home, the Ministry of National Defense, and the National Security Office during the operation. Lee is accused of abusing his power by ordering the suspension of the transfer of investigation records to the police, which were intended to apply charges of negligent homicide against then-Marine Corps 1st Division Commander Lim Seong-geun. When the records were transferred despite his orders, he allegedly initiated a rebellion investigation against the officers involved.
