Former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun Faces First Prosecutorial Interrogation After Arrest

On December 11, 2024, former Minister of National Defense Kim Yong-hyun, who was arrested on charges related to insurrection in connection with the 'December 3 Emergency Martial Law', is undergoing his first interrogation by prosecutors following his detention. The Special Investigation Headquarters for Emergency Martial Law, led by Park Se-hyun, the Chief Prosecutor of the Seoul High Prosecutors' Office, summoned Kim as a suspect for questioning starting at 2 PM. Kim was arrested late on December 10 on charges including involvement in insurrection and abuse of power. On the same night, at 11:52 PM, he reportedly attempted to take his own life at the Dongbu Detention Center. The Ministry of Justice confirmed that Kim was found trying to hang himself using a makeshift noose made from a tank top and thermal underwear in the detention center's restroom, but was quickly stopped by staff. They also stated that his health condition is stable. Kim had voluntarily appeared before the special investigation team on the morning of December 8 and was taken into custody after six hours of questioning.
