Footballer Hwang Ui-jo Extends Contract with Alanyaspor Amid Legal Issues

Hwang Ui-jo, a 33-year-old footballer, has renewed his contract with Turkish club Alanyaspor despite facing legal challenges related to the illegal filming of intimate videos. On July 12, Alanyaspor announced via their official social media channels that they have extended Hwang's contract for an additional two years, wishing him success in the upcoming season.

Hwang joined Nottingham Forest FC in the English Premier League in August 2022 but was quickly loaned to Olympiacos FC in Greece. He has since played on loan for FC Seoul, Norwich City FC in England, and Alanyaspor. In September of last year, he signed a one-year contract with Alanyaspor, marking his permanent transfer. During the last season, he played 30 league matches, scoring 7 goals and providing 2 assists (33 official matches with 7 goals and 3 assists).

His previous contract expired on June 30, leaving him as a free agent, but this new deal allows him to continue his career in Europe.

Hwang was indicted in July last year for filming intimate videos without the consent of two women between June and September 2022. In February, the court found him guilty of filming the videos but acquitted him of recording video calls, sentencing him to one year in prison, suspended for two years. Both Hwang and the prosecution have appealed the decision.

Recently, parts of Hwang's 93-page appeal document were made public, where he expressed his desire to represent South Korea in the upcoming North and Central America World Cup in June 2026, emphasizing his role as a senior striker and mentor to younger players.

According to football association regulations, if a player receives a prison sentence of one year or more, they are ineligible for national team selection for five years. If Hwang's initial sentence is upheld, he will be unable to wear the national team jersey. Meanwhile, his sister-in-law, who distributed his private videos online, was sentenced to three years in prison by the Supreme Court last September.
