Firefighter Movie Surpasses 2.5 Million Viewers and Achieves Donation Milestone

The film '소방관' (Firefighter), directed by Kwak Kyung-taek, has achieved remarkable success, surpassing 2.5 million viewers just 19 days after its release. As of December 22, 2024, at 1:06 PM, the film crossed the breakeven point and has raised approximately 297.5 million KRW through its '119 Won Donation Challenge'. This initiative combines the heartfelt support of moviegoers with the film's authenticity, showcasing a rare and warm gesture in the industry.
Additionally, '소방관' has now surpassed the total audience of '탈주' (Escape), which had 2,561,854 viewers, placing it among the top five Korean films of 2024. Alongside hits like '파묘' (Burial), '범죄도시4' (Crime City 4), '베테랑2' (Veteran 2), and '파일럿' (Pilot), '소방관' is contributing to a trend of successful films centered around professional occupations. If this momentum continues, '소방관' could become the first film to surpass 3 million viewers in the Korean film market since the release of '베테랑2'.
The '119 Won Donation Challenge' involves donating 119 KRW for every ticket sold to improve the equipment and treatment of firefighters in South Korea. This initiative allows viewers to contribute simply by watching the film, with funds directed towards the National Fire Hospital set to open in 2025. Thanks to the enthusiastic support from audiences, '소방관' is expected to maintain its long-term success, along with the continuation of the donation challenge.
This winter, '소방관' is captivating audiences nationwide with its portrayal of firefighters who, during the tragic 2001 Hongje-dong fire incident, faced dire conditions while striving to extinguish the flames and rescue everyone involved. The film is currently showing in theaters across the country.
