Fire Breaks Out at Kumho Tire Factory in Gwangju

A significant fire erupted at the Kumho Tire factory located in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, at approximately 7:11 AM on May 17, 2025. The facility specializes in manufacturing specialized tires, including those for aircraft and racing. Reports indicate that around 20 tons of natural rubber, a key raw material for tire production, were stored on-site, and the flames have made firefighting efforts particularly challenging. Fire authorities anticipate that it may take several days to fully extinguish the blaze.

Initially, a Level 1 response was activated, mobilizing all personnel from the local fire station within 17 minutes of the fire's outbreak. However, due to the fire's intensity, a Level 2 response was declared at 7:59 AM, deploying resources from all fire stations in Gwangju. Currently, 65 firefighting units, including helicopters, and 167 personnel are engaged in combating the fire. A high-capacity water spraying system capable of discharging 45,000 liters per minute has also been deployed with support from the Central Special Rescue Team. In light of concerns over water supply shortages for firefighting, local residents have been urged to conserve water usage.
