On April 1, 2025, filmmakers, including director Park Hae-il of 'Seoul's Spring,' joined forces to demand the impeachment of President Yoon Seok-yeol. The call was made through a video statement released by the Film Industry Coalition for Overcoming Crisis in the Film Sector.
The video featured prominent directors such as Jeong Ji-young, Im Soon-rye, and Heo Jin-ho, along with 1,025 other film industry professionals, including directors Kim Sung-soo ('Seoul's Spring'), Jang Joon-hwan ('1987'), Kim Tae-yong ('Wonderland'), Jeong Joo-ri ('Next, So-hee'), and Lee Eon-hee ('The Law of Love in Big Cities'), as well as actors Jung Jin-young and Park Hae-il. The video also included iconic lines from Korean cinema that resonate with the current impeachment climate, alongside footage of citizens protesting while awaiting the Constitutional Court's ruling on Yoon's impeachment.
The video was directed by Choi Ha-na, known for 'Abigail,' and utilized footage from various filmmakers and News Tapa. In the statement, the filmmakers expressed their ongoing demand for Yoon's immediate impeachment to uphold the Constitution of South Korea, stating, "Since the December 3 insurrection, we have been calling for Yoon's impeachment to protect the Constitution of the Republic of Korea." They emphasized their faith in the power of the citizens who have safeguarded democracy in South Korea, patiently waiting for the Constitutional Court to make a fair and reasonable decision regarding Yoon's impeachment.
They reiterated that Korean cinema has always been intertwined with the history of democracy in South Korea, urging the Constitutional Court to promptly remove Yoon from office and uphold the Constitution. The Constitutional Court is set to announce its ruling on the impeachment case against President Yoon Seok-yeol on the morning of April 15, 2025, marking 111 days since he was impeached on December 14, 2024, during a state of emergency. During this period, the court has held 11 hearings to review arguments from both sides and has conducted numerous deliberations on the case.
