A former gang member turned YouTuber has been sentenced to a fine by the appellate court for his involvement in the kidnapping and assault of a junior gang member who attempted to leave the organization. The individual, referred to as A (34), was a member of the Chuncheon Sikgupa, a gang monitored by the police, and openly acknowledged his gang affiliation while creating content on YouTube.

On June 6, the Chuncheon District Court's Criminal Division 1, presided over by Judge Shim Hyun-geun, upheld the original sentence, imposing a fine of 15 million won on A for charges including joint confinement under the Act on the Punishment of Violences.

The case dates back to July 2021 when B (22), after expressing his desire to leave the gang, went into hiding. A, along with junior gang members, located B in a motel in Wonju, Gangwon Province, and subsequently confined him for approximately 14 hours at a pension in Chuncheon in August of the same year.

During the confinement, A confiscated B's mobile phone to prevent his escape and monitored him closely, even sleeping in the same room. When B reiterated his intention to leave the gang, A ordered junior members to beat him in a practice known as 'julbbata,' which lasted about an hour. Afterward, A warned B not to be seen around Chuncheon and to avoid any greetings if they crossed paths before releasing him.

The appellate court stated, "We found no new circumstances or significant changes that would affect the sentencing since the original ruling."

Additionally, A is currently serving a three-year prison sentence for drug-related charges, including the use and distribution of ketamine and other narcotics, which occurred between October 2022 and August 2023.

Jin, a member of the globally renowned group BTS (방탄소년단), has made headlines by purchasing a luxury apartment in the upscale neighborhood of Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, for a staggering 17.5 billion won in cash. According to real estate sources on June 5, Jin acquired a unit in the prestigious Hannam The Hill complex without taking out a loan. 

Previously, in July 2019, he bought a 233㎡ unit in the same complex for 4.49 billion won, followed by another purchase of a 206㎡ unit for 4.27 billion won later that year in November.

The court upheld findings from previous trials that confirmed the involvement of Lee and the company, Ssangbangwool, in covering the costs of President Lee Jae-myung's visit to North Korea. Legal experts suggest that this ruling may impact the ongoing trial of President Lee, who has also been indicted as a co-conspirator in the North Korean remittance case. However, the Democratic Party is currently pushing for a 'trial suspension law' that would halt criminal proceedings against a sitting president, leaving the future of the trial uncertain.

The Supreme Court's second division, led by Justice Park Young-jae, confirmed the lower court's ruling, which included a fine of 250 million won and a forfeiture of approximately 325.95 million won. Lee was accused of having former Ssangbangwool Chairman Kim Seong-tae pay a total of 8 million dollars, which included 5 million dollars for a 'North Korean smart farm improvement' project and 3 million dollars for President Lee's travel expenses to North Korea during his tenure as Gyeonggi Province Governor in 2019.

Both the first and second trials, as well as the Supreme Court, acknowledged that 800,000 dollars were remitted to North Korea, with 394,000 dollars being classified as violations of foreign exchange laws due to unauthorized transfers, including 164,000 dollars for the smart farm project and 230,000 dollars for travel expenses. The remaining 406,000 dollars was ruled as not proven to be a crime. Notably, the court found that 200,000 dollars of the travel expenses were delivered to the Workers' Party of Korea.

Additionally, the court recognized Lee's guilt in receiving bribes and illegal political funds amounting to approximately 320 million won from Ssangbangwool. Claims made by Lee that the prosecution manipulated the case were dismissed by the court.

President Lee Jae-myung has been undergoing a first trial at Suwon District Court since June of last year, facing charges of 'third-party bribery' related to this case. He is accused of facilitating North Korean business dealings at the request of Ssangbangwool, which allegedly led to the covering of travel expenses through Lee Hwa-young. A current judge noted that since the Supreme Court has confirmed the illegal remittance to North Korea, the determination of whether there was collusion between President Lee and Lee Hwa-young will be crucial in deciding guilt or innocence.

Previously, Lee Hwa-young had testified in June 2023 that he reported the payment of travel expenses to Governor Lee Jae-myung, but later recanted this statement in court, claiming it was coerced by the prosecution. However, the first trial's ruling indicated that Lee had strong motives to promote the governor's visit and that he had repeatedly stated he informed the governor about the arrangements, which supports suspicions of President Lee's involvement in the remittance. The court did not make a separate judgment on whether Lee Hwa-young reported directly to President Lee.

The case against President Lee has yet to see a formal trial despite being over a year since the indictment. The proceedings have been stalled for over three months due to a request from President Lee's side to disqualify the judge, and further delays occurred with a change in the judicial panel at the beginning of this year.

A preparatory hearing is scheduled for July 22, but it remains uncertain whether the trial will proceed. The trial suspension law proposed by the Democratic Party has passed the National Assembly's Legislative and Judiciary Committee and is awaiting a vote in the plenary session. If the amendment passes, it is likely that the trial regarding the North Korean remittance case will not occur during President Lee's term.

HYBE is set to roll out a series of projects aimed at strengthening its presence in the rapidly growing Latin American music market. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to diversify its portfolio across multiple languages and genres through a 'multi-home, multi-genre' approach.

The first project is a Latin band audition titled 'PASE A LA FAMA' (Path to Fame), which will premiere on June 8. The selection process for band members will be broadcast on Telemundo, NBCUniversal's Spanish-language network. Participants from various countries, including Mexico, Spain, and Brazil, will compete, with three teams ultimately being chosen. Viewers will have the opportunity to follow the contestants' journeys on air.

In addition, an audition program for forming a Latin boy group will also be unveiled soon. From a pool of applicants across Latin America and the United States, 300 candidates have been selected, with 16 finalists set to undergo intensive training at a camp in Mexico.

Both auditions share a common feature: all participants will undergo a mentorship training program. This initiative aims to apply K-pop methodologies to maximize the artistic talents of participants within the Latin music genre.

HYBE's focus on the Latin market represents an expansion of its global artist production capabilities, previously honed through the English-speaking girl group project KATSEYE. This move signifies a shift from an Asia-centric K-pop production model to a more inclusive, multilingual, and multi-regional framework.

Through these Latin auditions, HYBE is expected to complete a global lineup that connects Asia, the U.S., and Latin America. This will include K-pop artists like BTS (방탄소년단) and SEVENTEEN, the Japanese localization group &TEAM, and now a range of Spanish-speaking artists.

The reason behind HYBE's investment in the Latin market is its remarkable growth rate. According to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), the Latin American region saw a 22.5% growth in 2024 compared to the previous year, marking 15 consecutive years of growth. This figure significantly surpasses the global average growth rate of 4.8%. Notably, Mexico, where HYBE Latin America is based, has recently entered the ranks of the world's top 10 music markets.

Moreover, Latin music has the advantage of appealing to both South America and the U.S. According to U.S. government statistics, as of July 2023, the Hispanic population in the U.S. stands at 65.2 million, making up 19.5% of the total population and the largest ethnic minority. The growth rate of the Hispanic population is nine times that of the non-Hispanic population, allowing Latin music artists to target both markets simultaneously.

In recent years, the U.S. Latin music market has experienced rapid growth. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) reported that Latin music revenue in the U.S. reached $1.09 billion in 2022, $1.4 billion in 2023, and is projected to hit $1.42 billion in 2024. Artists like Bad Bunny and Karol G have made significant impacts on the U.S. Billboard charts with their Spanish-language songs.

Gah Jong-hyun, CEO of HYBE Latin America, expressed optimism about discovering and nurturing the next generation of global Latin artists based on HYBE's top-tier production capabilities. He stated that this audition project will enhance HYBE's global business capabilities by strengthening the triangular connection between Asia, English-speaking regions, and Spanish-speaking areas.

To expand its influence in Latin America, HYBE established a local subsidiary in 2023 and strengthened its business foundation by acquiring Exile Music, a company active in recording, music publishing, artist management, and concert planning.

The police have recently forwarded the last sexual assault case against 정명석, the leader of JMS (Christian Gospel Mission), to the prosecution. This case involves a female member, identified as A (in her 30s), who reported that she was sexually harassed by 정명석 at a training center in Geumsan, South Chungcheong Province, between 2018 and 2020. A filed her complaint with the police two years ago, claiming she was subjected to harassment on seven occasions.

In total, 22 victims have reported sexual crimes committed by 정명석, with three cases reaching the Supreme Court for final rulings. The police confirmed that they have concluded their investigations into the sexual offenses related to 정명석. The Supreme Court has already issued a definitive 17-year prison sentence for 정명석, who was found guilty of raping a Hong Kong national member, Maple (30), and sexually assaulting an Australian national member, Amy (31), along with a Korean member, between February 2018 and September 2021.

경찰이 최근 JMS(기독교복음선교회) 리더 정명석에 대한 마지막 성폭력 사건을 검찰에 송치했다. 이 사건은 30대 여성 회원 A가 2018년부터 2020년 사이 충청남도 금산의 훈련 센터에서 정명석에게 성희롱을 당했다고 신고한 사건이다. A는 두 년 전 경찰에 고소장을 제출하며 7차례에 걸쳐 괴롭힘을 당했다고 주장했다.
