'Extraordinary Attorney Woo' Star Park Eun-bin Transforms in 'Hyperknife' Alongside Veteran Seol Kyung-gu at Disney Showcase

'Extraordinary Attorney Woo' fans may want to brace themselves for a new side of Park Eun-bin. The actress, who has been in the industry for 32 years, is set to showcase a remarkable transformation in her upcoming role in 'Hyperknife,' where she stars alongside seasoned actor Seol Kyung-gu.
On November 21, 2024, the Walt Disney Company held the 'Disney Content Showcase - APAC 2024' at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. The event featured a press conference for original content from the Asia-Pacific region, where the production teams and lead actors of Disney+ Korea originals such as 'Trigger,' 'Fine,' 'Hyperknife,' 'Knock Off,' and 'Nine Puzzle' shared insights about their projects.
During the 'Hyperknife' press conference, Park Eun-bin, Seol Kyung-gu, and director Kim Jung-hyun discussed the series, which tells the story of a doctor who resorts to illegal surgeries to make ends meet. The plot thickens as the protagonist, Jeong Se-ok, loses her medical license due to a fallout with her mentor, Choi Deok-hee. The narrative unfolds as the disgraced mentor returns to confront his beloved yet troubled disciple. Park Eun-bin takes on the role of the surgeon Jeong Se-ok, while veteran actor Seol Kyung-gu portrays her mentor, Choi Deok-hee. Directed by Kim Jung-hyun, 'Hyperknife' is set to premiere in March 2025.
Earlier that day, Park Eun-bin, Seol Kyung-gu, and director Kim Jung-hyun also made appearances at the Disney Showcase. Park Eun-bin expressed her excitement about playing a distressed neurosurgeon, stating, "This will likely be Disney+'s first medical thriller. The character's complexity will offer viewers a unique experience, and I believe they will enjoy the intricate relationship between my character and my mentor."
Director Kim Jung-hyun shared his enthusiasm about working with the two acclaimed actors, saying, "I was thrilled and nervous when I first met them. Their performances have been seen in various dramas and films, but what they will present in 'Hyperknife' will be something you haven't seen before. It was an honor to witness their passionate performances firsthand, which motivated me to enhance the drama's quality."
Park Eun-bin is expected to deliver a more intense performance than in her previous works. She remarked, "When I first read the script, I found the character's setup and overall structure fascinating. I had always wanted to play a doctor, and while the trailer shows only a glimpse, there is much more to come. I felt reassured knowing I would be acting alongside Seol Kyung-gu."
She continued, "As I prepared for the character Se-ok, I was curious about her mindset and emotions. I believe viewers will also be intrigued by the conflicts presented in 'Hyperknife.' By the end of the series, I hope their questions will be answered. I approached the role with the intention of being instinctively emotional rather than overthinking it."
When asked about the casting choices, director Kim Jung-hyun explained, "While I can't disclose specific details, I believe once the project is released, everyone will resonate with my thoughts. I can confidently say that you will be surprised by the performances and expressions of both Park Eun-bin and Seol Kyung-gu. They will showcase something entirely new."
'Hyperknife' aims to present a medical thriller that even seasoned actors find challenging. Seol Kyung-gu shared, "This is my first time playing a doctor, and it was a new experience. I learned about the precise actions and procedures from a neurosurgery professor, which helped me portray the character authentically. My first surgery scene was the most difficult, as my hands are not very delicate."
Park Eun-bin added, "We received coaching to ensure realism while also allowing for dramatic liberties. Thankfully, my fingers are slender, which helped me perform some scenes without a stunt double."
Despite being a prolific actress, 'Hyperknife' marks Park Eun-bin's first original OTT project. She reflected, "Through my recent experiences, I've come to believe that the projects we encounter are somewhat predestined. It feels like fate or connection plays a significant role in our choices. This collaboration with Disney+ is particularly special, and I am thrilled to be part of this international event. I hope everyone will look forward to 'Hyperknife.'"
Seol Kyung-gu noted the unique mentor-student dynamic in the series, stating, "While it’s a different kind of relationship, I believe understanding human emotions is crucial for acting. The interactions between the mentor and student are refreshing and may surprise viewers."
Park Eun-bin described the script's initial impression as 'mysterious,' emphasizing the emotional depth required to understand the characters' complex relationship. She stated, "This drama does not provide clear answers but invites viewers to experience the emotional journey alongside us."
Director Kim Jung-hyun emphasized the unconventional nature of the relationships depicted in the series, stating, "I hope viewers will appreciate the unfamiliar dynamics and the conflicts that arise without a predetermined message. I believe everyone will find relatable moments in the performances."
In closing, Seol Kyung-gu expressed his excitement about promoting the series internationally for the first time, urging fans to support 'Hyperknife' when it premieres in early 2025. Park Eun-bin echoed his sentiments, hoping viewers would experience new sensations through the series. Director Kim Jung-hyun also expressed eagerness for the audience's reactions, encouraging everyone to enjoy the show and share it with friends.
The 'Disney Showcase' took place over two days at Marina Bay Sands, featuring around 500 journalists, influencers, and Disney partners from 12 Asia-Pacific countries, including South Korea, Singapore, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and Australia.
'Hyperknife' is set to debut on Disney+ in March 2025.
