Epik High Discusses The Boyz in Unique Photo Card World Cup
On December 19, the hip-hop group Epik High shared a video titled 'Epik High's Male Idol Photo Card World Cup (Extremely Subjective and Unique Judging Criteria)' on their online channel. In this video, the members reflected on photo cards from various idol groups, describing them as a sort of business card that determines whether someone is an idol or not.
Tablo mentioned, 'I have a ton of photo cards at home. Collecting K-Pop CDs is a hobby of mine,' indicating his familiarity with the concept. He then acknowledged a realization: 'We’ve been taking our photo cards incorrectly. In the past, we shot them like fashion photos, heavily edited with Photoshop. Recently, friends from Super Junior told us that photo cards should be personal and natural, like selfies.'
The rules for the photo card world cup stated that appearance would not be a factor in the evaluation. Epik High emphasized that they would focus solely on the artistic quality, considering aspects like angle, lighting, and mise-en-scène.
Notable mentions in the competition included Yesung, Ha Hyun-sang, Infinite's Sungyeol, Day6's Young K, Ha Sung-woon, and EXO's D.O. Ultimately, the winners were The Boyz's New and Q, who entertained viewers by dressing up as animated characters for their photo cards.
Two Cut raised a question about whether they dressed up specifically for the photo card or if it was a spontaneous decision. The production team confirmed it was indeed for the photo card. Epik High members expressed their respect, stating, 'If that’s the case, we acknowledge it. We also dress up for concert promotional posters, and it’s not an easy task. It takes a lot of courage to dress up like that, especially for those who are already established.'
They also commented on the evolving nature of idols, saying, 'These days, it seems like idols are becoming more hip-hop. Even our junior artists try to take photos in an idol-like manner.'
Epik High expressed their desire to meet the dressed-up members of The Boyz, jokingly stating, 'If we get to meet them, we’ll dress up too. Please invite us to your YouTube channel.' They also reminisced about how The Boyz's Sunwoo created a hand sign for Epik High, saying, 'At that time, we didn’t realize how quirky he was. A new world has opened up for us.'
