Remembering Actor Park Gyu-chae: Two Years Since His Passing

The city of Seoul has announced the introduction of its first autonomous community bus, named ‘Local Companion Autonomous Bus,’ set to begin trial operations in the Dongjak District starting June 30. While autonomous buses have previously operated during late-night and early-morning hours, this marks the first time they will serve a community bus route.

The newly launched Dongjak Local Companion Autonomous Bus (Dongjak A01) will operate along a 1.62 km route from the main gate of Soongsil University to Soongsil University Station and then to the rear gate of Chung-Ang University. Two electric autonomous buses will transport passengers along this route.

Service hours are scheduled for weekdays from 10:00 AM to 4:10 PM, with 14 trips per day at intervals of 20 to 25 minutes. Operations will pause from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM.

Previously, the late-night and early-morning autonomous buses were managed and operated by the city of Seoul. In contrast, the community autonomous buses will be directly managed by local districts to tailor operations to specific regional needs.

Seoul plans to cover the entire operating costs for the first year, and from the second year onward, it will evaluate passenger transport performance and operational distance to provide technological development subsidies based on local regulations.

After a trial period that includes test rides until July 11, the service will be open to the general public starting July 14. On this official launch date, real-time arrival information will also be available on bus information terminals.

Rides will be free until the first half of 2026, when a fare system will be implemented. However, passengers will need to tag their transportation cards upon boarding and alighting.

In September, additional routes for autonomous community buses will be introduced, connecting Janghanpyeong Station to Kyung Hee University Hospital and Gajwa Station to the Seodaemun District Office.

The city stated, “We will monitor citizen feedback and operational stability to gradually expand the service areas.”

The legal proceedings for actor Oh Young-soo (오영수), who is facing charges of sexual assault, are set to resume. According to legal sources on June 30, the Suwon District Court's Criminal Appeals Division 6-1, presided over by Judge Kwak Hyung-seob, has scheduled the appeal hearing for August 12. 

Originally, the verdict for Oh was expected on June 3, but it was postponed to June 10 due to the presidential election, and then rescheduled again to July 1. The court has now confirmed that the hearings will continue in August, during which witness testimonies will be taken. 

Oh is accused of two instances of sexual assault against an individual identified as A while he was in Daegu for a theater performance in the summer of 2017. He allegedly embraced A on a walking path and kissed A on the cheek in front of A's residence. Oh has denied all allegations throughout the investigation and trial. However, in March of last year, the first trial court found him guilty and sentenced him to eight months in prison, suspended for two years. Both the prosecution and Oh's legal team have appealed the decision. 

During the closing arguments in April, the prosecution requested a one-year prison sentence, stating, "The defendant has not received forgiveness from the victim and instead claims that the victim is making false statements." They emphasized that Oh, a veteran actor with 50 years in the theater industry, committed the assault against a vulnerable junior member, causing the victim to live in fear in their daily life. 

In his final statement, Oh expressed shame at being in court at his age, acknowledging that if his actions were indeed wrong, he would accept the consequences. However, he maintained that he did not believe his behavior constituted sexual assault. He also expressed regret if his actions had hurt the complainant, stating, "My life, which I have upheld for 80 years, has crumbled without value. It is empty and hard to endure. Please let me return to my place." 

In response, the victim's attorney argued that Oh further harmed the victim by stating, "I did it with a daughter-like heart" when the victim sought an apology. They asserted that Oh's statements have been consistent since the complaint was filed, lending credibility to the victim's claims. The attorney urged the court to impose a severe sentence to prevent similar crimes in the theater industry. 

Oh gained international fame for his role as Oh Il-nam in the Netflix original series Squid Game (오징어 게임), earning the nickname "Grandpa Ganbu." He also made history as the first Korean actor to win a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Television Series at the 2022 ceremony. However, due to the ongoing sexual assault controversy, he has withdrawn from the upcoming film Family (대가족), with all his scenes being cut from the final edit.

The Freedom and Peace Museum located at the entrance of Mount Soyosan in Dongducheon, Gyeonggi Province, focuses on the Korean War. It showcases the contributions and sacrifices of 16 combat-support nations (including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand, France, Turkey, Philippines, Greece, Thailand, South Africa, Belgium, Luxembourg, Colombia, and Ethiopia) and 6 medical-support nations (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Italy, Germany, and India) who fought under the UN flag. Flags of the combat-support nations are displayed outside the museum, and their names and flags can be seen throughout the exhibits.

In June, marking the 75th anniversary of the Korean War, a special exhibition titled 'Latvians in the Korea War' was held, focusing on a country not typically recognized among the combatant nations. Latvia, known to many Koreans as one of the Baltic States alongside Estonia and Lithuania, has a lesser-known history of participation in the Korean War. This exhibition aimed to inform Koreans about Latvia's involvement. It was organized by the Latvian Embassy in South Korea, the Latvian War Museum, and the South Korean Ministry of Veterans Affairs, with the Dongducheon city government providing the venue.

In the main exhibition hall on the second floor, panels detail the stories of young Latvians who immigrated to the United States and joined the U.S. military to fight in the Korean War under the UN flag. The design of the panels reflects the colors of the Latvian flag, featuring the names and actions of soldiers in military uniforms. One notable figure is Aivars Karlis Salenieks, who, at the age of 21 in 1952, distinguished himself in combat in Yanggu, Gangwon Province, known as 'Punchbowl.' He sacrificed his life by throwing himself on a grenade to save his comrades. Another soldier, Janis Krūmiņš, was 22 when he was injured in a battle at 'Pochap Hill' in Yeoncheon, Gyeonggi Province, and later volunteered for reconnaissance, where he ultimately lost his life.

The exhibition also honors other Latvian soldiers who died in the Korean War, including Rudolf Liepa and Bruno Glazers, as well as Leodīns Ozoliņš, Gunārs Stopnieks, and Vismandis Mangulis. A total of 14 confirmed Latvian soldiers served in the U.S. military during the Korean War, with four of them losing their lives. This exhibition also highlights Latvia's historical struggles, having endured half a century of Soviet occupation before declaring independence in May 1990 and joining the UN the following year. Similar histories are shared by the other Baltic states, Estonia and Lithuania. During the final stages of World War II, around 120,000 Latvians fled their homeland to escape Soviet oppression, with many settling in the U.S., Canada, and the UK.

Latvians who settled in the U.S. were eager to integrate into their new society and many enlisted in the military. When the Korean War broke out, at least 14 young Latvians joined the U.S. forces, with four making the ultimate sacrifice. Many of these soldiers were recognized for their bravery and received various honors. The Latvian Embassy in South Korea expressed the desire to share the stories of these soldiers, stating, 'When Latvian soldiers found themselves unable to defend their homeland, they bravely fought for the ideals of freedom in another country's military.' They also noted that many Latvians likely saw reflections of their own homeland's struggles in Korea's situation.

On June 25, the 75th anniversary of the Korean War, Latvian Ambassador Janis Berzins visited the Freedom and Peace Museum and thanked Dongducheon Mayor Park Hyung-deok for hosting the exhibition. Ambassador Berzins remarked, 'Latvia fought for freedom, democracy, and the rule of law in our homeland under Soviet occupation, and we are now part of the international solidarity supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression. Every nation deserves to enjoy freedom in peace, free from oppression and invasion.'

Singer and actor Changjo (최종현) of TEEN TOP has successfully completed his first domestic concert following his military discharge. On June 29, he held the second performance of his inaugural solo Asia fan meeting tour, 'The Blooming Hour: CHANGJO' at SA Hall in Seoul.

This tour marks Changjo's first solo endeavor since his debut, having kicked off with a successful show in Taiwan on June 21. As it was his first domestic performance after returning from military service, Changjo showcased his versatile charm through both singing and dancing, sharing updates about his life and creating unforgettable memories for his fans.

Opening the concert with 'Wait (기다려)', Changjo expressed his excitement, stating, "I was really nervous, but seeing the faces of my Angels (틴탑's official fandom name) made me feel more happiness than anxiety."

He continued to deliver a strong live performance with his solo tracks 'It's You (잇츠 유)', 'Rose (로즈)', and 'Hurting U (허팅 유)', captivating the audience with his unique style and engaging grooves.
