Disrespectful Disposal of National Flag Sparks Police Investigation in Cheongju
On June 6, a pile of trash bags containing South Korean national flags (태극기) was discovered along a roadside in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, prompting an investigation by local police. Reports indicated that multiple flags were carelessly discarded in several garbage bags near Cheongju Agricultural High School in the Cheongwon District.
According to the National Flag Act, the South Korean flag must be treated with respect and should not be used for any other purpose if damaged. Instead, it should be disposed of properly, such as through incineration. Disposing of a damaged flag improperly can lead to violations of the National Flag Act, and if intent is proven, it could result in charges of flag desecration under criminal law.
Authorities are currently examining the scene and working to identify the individual responsible for this act.
