Disney APAC Head Highlights Popularity of Korean Content in the Region

At the 'Disney Content Showcase 2024' held on November 21 at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Singapore, Carol Choi, the head of original content strategy for The Walt Disney Company in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, emphasized the significant popularity of Korean series on Disney+. She noted that 'Killer's Shopping Mall' has emerged as the most-watched content in the APAC region. Additionally, the travel variety show featuring BTS (방탄소년단) members Jimin (지민) and Jungkook (정국), titled 'Is This Right?!' has become the most-viewed Disney+ variety show not only in the APAC region but also globally.

Choi remarked, "The storytelling from the APAC region resonates globally, showcasing that local narratives have reached a world-class level and have become a vital part of overall entertainment consumption, supported by a passionate fanbase." She also highlighted critically acclaimed works such as 'Casino', 'Carnival', 'The Worst Evil', and 'Killer's Shopping Mall', which have garnered numerous awards at major ceremonies. Choi reaffirmed that the APAC content strategy will continue to focus on premium originals.

Furthermore, she stated, "Authentic storytelling possesses the power to captivate audiences worldwide. Our experience with the global success of 'Shogun' taught us that the most compelling stories are often found in new, unexplored worlds. At the core of this is storytelling that is genuine and fearless. The APAC region has become a source of inspiration for some of the world's best storytellers, thanks to its rich heritage and beloved intellectual properties. Following the success of Korean originals, we are expanding our lineup with various tentpole projects such as 'Lighting Store', 'Hyper Knife', and 'Knock Off'."

The Walt Disney Company (Disney) hosted the 'Disney Content Showcase 2024' on November 20-21 at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, where global stars from the U.S. and APAC regions gathered to preview upcoming theatrical releases and streaming projects for 2025-2026. The event attracted over 400 media representatives from 12 countries, including Korea and Japan.

On the first day, Disney and its subsidiaries, including 20th Century Studios, Searchlight Pictures, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar, Lucasfilm, and Marvel Studios, showcased their theatrical and streaming lineups, highlighting their exceptional creativity and powerful storytelling. The second day focused on introducing lineups from Korea, Japan, and the broader APAC region, drawing significant interest.
