Director Yang Woo-seok Discusses Social Issues and His Upcoming Film 'Big Family'

As the release of his film '대가족' (Big Family) approaches, director Yang Woo-seok shared his thoughts on recent social issues and the film itself during an interview on December 4 in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul.

'Big Family' tells the story of a dumpling restaurant owner, played by Kim Yoon-seok, whose life takes an unexpected turn when his son, portrayed by Lee Seung-gi, becomes a monk, leading to the arrival of adorable grandchildren he has never met before. This family comedy explores the humorous dynamics of their newfound cohabitation.

Before diving into the film, Yang addressed the recent declaration of martial law, stating, "I understand martial law as a legal measure for military intervention in situations that cannot be resolved by police and administrative means. Personally, I don't believe South Korea is in such a situation right now. I think there is no reason for the military to maintain order."

He further explained that the possibility of lifting martial law depends on the quorum of the National Assembly, reflecting on how the situation is not as complicated as it may seem. "Things have settled down more quickly than expected," he added.

Reflecting on the societal fatigue that often accompanies such issues, Yang noted, "When these kinds of issues arise, people usually feel surprised, confused, and fatigued. In times like these, I hope audiences can experience a range of emotions together in the theater. Perhaps our film can help wash away that fatigue."

'Big Family' is set to hit theaters on December 11.
