Director Yang Woo-seok Discusses Heartwarming Family Journey in 'Big Family'

As the release date of the film '대가족' (Big Family) approaches on December 11, director Yang Woo-seok shared insights about the film's concept, production process, and the profound significance of family. In an interview on December 4 at a location in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, Yang elaborated on the film's narrative.
'Big Family' tells the story of a dumpling restaurant owner, played by Kim Yoon-seok, whose family line is interrupted when his son, Lee Seung-gi, becomes a monk. Unexpectedly, adorable grandchildren arrive, leading to a delightful and chaotic cohabitation.
Known for his socially conscious films like 'The Attorney' (변호인) and the 'Steel Rain' (강철비) series, Yang has shifted his focus to a more relatable theme of family in this project. He expressed his desire to address what he believes is a crucial narrative for today's society. "For the past decade, I felt compelled to tell stories that resonate with societal needs," he reflected. "'The Attorney' was about a lawyer urging his peers to uphold the law, while 'Steel Rain' aimed to simulate security crises on the Korean Peninsula. This time, I wanted to evoke emotions through the universal yet personal theme of family."
Yang pointed out the rapid evolution of family structures and meanings over recent decades. He noted, "In the past, extended families were common, but now we often see a structure where six adults exist for one child. Despite this shift, the bonds and responsibilities within families remain vital. We are entering an era where families must look out for one another."
The title 'Big Family' itself reflects Yang's contemplation. He explained that it carries a dual meaning, not only referring to a large family but also inviting questions and reflections on the essence of family. The film aims to explore the nature of familial relationships and how they can evolve and grow.
Characters in the film each define and seek out family in their own ways. The monk son, Ham Moon-seok (Lee Seung-gi), searches for the meaning of family within Buddhist scriptures, while the protagonist, Ham Mu-ok (Kim Yoon-seok), realizes the world has played a significant role in his upbringing. Yang stated, "We are both a part of the world and the world itself. The story extends beyond a narrow definition of family to encompass a broader sense of community."
Additionally, 'Big Family' weaves humor into the themes of familial conflict and reconciliation. Yang remarked, "Family is not always beautiful and perfect like in Disney movies. It is a complex entity filled with conflicts, complexities, and traumas. Nevertheless, I wanted to showcase how families can overcome their wounds and grow together."
In conclusion, Yang hopes that viewers will reflect on the meaning of family through the film and experience growth and reconciliation within their own lives.
