Director Tarsem Singh Shares Secrets Behind 'The Fall: Director's Cut' Success in Korea

Director Tarsem Singh expressed his gratitude towards Korean audiences for their warm reception of 'The Fall: Director's Cut' during a press conference held on February 6 at CGV Yongsan I-Park Mall in Seoul. He noted, "I appreciate the love from Korean female viewers. It seems that when people are shown something completely different from their expectations, they become excited."

Released on January 25, 2025, 'The Fall: Director's Cut' is a re-release of the original film 'The Fall' from 2008. The story follows a stuntman named Roy who tells a fantastical tale to a curious young girl named Alexandria, set against breathtaking backdrops from 24 countries around the world.

This director's cut features enhanced visuals through 4K remastering and includes new scenes, marking its return after 18 years. Reflecting on the film's re-release, Singh commented, "Just like how films such as 'Parasite' and 'Oldboy' showcase something entirely different, I believe audiences respond enthusiastically to that. Fashion trends often come back in retro styles after 20 years, and I feel my film is similar. If 'The Fall' had received overwhelming support from critics upon its initial release, the outcome might have been different. Not every film can satisfy everyone. It's okay for viewers to say 'It's fantastic' or 'It’s terrible,' but if they only say 'It's okay,' that makes me uneasy."

He also expressed his appreciation for the internet, which has allowed the film to be rediscovered by new generations. "I didn’t have a social media account, so I was unaware that there were people who were so passionate about 'The Fall.' It seems that a completely different generation is now interested in this film. Initially, no one wanted to release it, so I funded it myself. I know there are many female viewers in Korea, and I am very thankful for that," he added.
