Director Lee Sun-jung Reflects on 'Guitar Man' Ahead of Release Amidst Kim Sae-ron's Absence

Director Lee Sun-jung, who co-directed and starred in the film 'Guitar Man', shared his thoughts on the upcoming release in light of the absence of the late actress Kim Sae-ron. Speaking at a press event on May 21 at Lotte Cinema World Tower in Songpa, Seoul, he stated, "We did not commercially exploit Kim Sae-ron for the film's promotion. We aimed for a May release as originally planned."

'Guitar Man', set to premiere on May 30, tells the story of a gifted guitarist named Gi-cheol, who seeks hope through music amidst harsh realities, with both Kim Jong-myeon and Lee Sun-jung directing.

Lee expressed his nervousness about the film's release, noting that even seasoned actors feel anxious before a premiere. "Having been in business for a long time, I usually don’t feel nervous, but since filmmaking is not my usual field, I felt differently this time," he shared.

Kim Sae-ron completed filming for 'Guitar Man' in November last year but tragically passed away in February. Reflecting on the moment he learned of her death, Lee recalled, "When I first received the news from the producer, I couldn't believe it. It was already reported in the news, but it didn’t feel real. I was preparing for editing with a goal to release in late May, hoping Kim Sae-ron would return quickly. I thought it would be great for her to show her authentic self through independent films rather than big commercial projects."

He also addressed concerns from some quarters about the timing of the film's release, with some questioning whether it was an attempt to commercially exploit the late actress. Lee firmly stated, "I stand by my decision. We had been preparing for a May release long before Kim Sae-ron's passing, and I have conducted media interviews regarding this. I am not one to wait for opportunities or be cautious in my actions. There are no commercial motives or ulterior intentions here."

Recently, Kim Sae-ron's family has been involved in legal disputes regarding her past relationship with actor Kim Soo-hyun during her minor years. Lee expressed his worries about the film's release amidst these developments, saying, "I hope audiences remember Kim Sae-ron's bright smile and her passion for acting when they watch the film. The filming was recent, having started in September last year, so I hoped this film could provide a moment of respite. I also focused on showcasing her joyful moments during editing."

When asked if Kim Sae-ron's family was invited to the premiere, Lee mentioned, "I expressed my desire to invite them, but her mother’s health is not good, so her attendance is uncertain."
