Director Kim Seong-soo Critiques President Yoon's Martial Law Declaration at Korean Film Awards

During the 11th Korean Film Producers Association Awards held on December 17, 2024, at Indie Space in Donggyo-dong, Seoul, director Kim Seong-soo of the film 'Seoul's Spring' received both the Best Director and Best Film awards. In his acceptance speech, Kim expressed his initial anxieties about the film's release, particularly due to the significant budget incurred during the pandemic. He noted, 'I was worried about whether we would break even, but a miracle happened as so many people came to see it. I was happy, yet I wondered why so many were watching and why the youth were particularly interested.'

He then addressed the recent political turmoil, stating, 'On December 3, our irrational president suddenly attempted an absurd coup, prompting citizens to rush to the National Assembly. After the impeachment was rejected, young people took to the streets to support it, and witnessing this made me realize why our film resonated with so many. Today's youth possess a strong sense of justice and righteous beliefs.'

Kim further reflected on his responsibilities as a filmmaker, saying, 'As a director, I worry about what messages I should convey to such an incredible audience and how to communicate differently than before. At the same time, I feel excited as a storyteller in this new era. I will work hard to create a film that meets expectations.'

The Korean Film Producers Association Awards aim to express gratitude and encouragement to those who have made significant contributions to the Korean film industry over the past year.
