Director Kim Hyung-joo Opens Up About Yoo Ah-in's Controversy Ahead of 'Victory' Release

On March 19, a press screening for the film 'Victory' (승부) took place at CGV Yongsan I-Park Mall in Seoul, featuring lead actors Lee Byung-hun, Go Chang-seok, Jo Woo-jin, Moon Jung-hee, Hyun Bong-sik, and director Kim Hyung-joo. The film tells the story of legendary Go player Cho Hun-hyun (played by Lee Byung-hun), who, after losing to his disciple Lee Chang-ho (Yoo Ah-in), strives to reclaim his status as a champion.

During the event, director Kim Hyung-joo candidly addressed questions regarding lead actor Yoo Ah-in, who has been embroiled in a drug controversy. He humorously expressed a desire to discuss the matter over drinks, eliciting laughter from the audience.

Initially, the casting of Lee Byung-hun and Yoo Ah-in was seen as a perfect combination. However, the release of the film faced significant delays due to Yoo Ah-in's drug incident, which emerged just before the film's premiere. The film's distribution also shifted from Netflix to theatrical release, adding to the challenges.

Kim shared, "Lee Byung-hun was cast first, and I felt like I had the world in my hands. When Yoo Ah-in was also cast, it felt like a bonus. I was thrilled but also felt a lot of pressure. Honestly, as a lead actor, it was a disappointing and irresponsible incident. He has made mistakes as a member of society and is currently facing consequences. I don’t think I have much more to say on that."

He continued, "On a personal note, it felt like being trapped in a hellish tunnel, with nothing I could do. It was overwhelming. However, now that we see a glimmer of light with the film's release, I feel relieved and emotional. The cast and crew have also been eagerly awaiting this moment, and I can’t help but reflect on the faces of those who have worked hard on this project. My emotions are mixed."

'Victory' is set to hit theaters on March 26.
