Director Kim Hee-won Reflects on His Directorial Debut for 'Lighting Store'

Actor-turned-director Kim Hee-won shared his thoughts on stepping into the role of a director during a recent press conference for the new Disney+ original series '조명가게' (Lighting Store) held at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Singapore. The event featured writer Kang Full, director Kim Hee-won, and cast members Ju Ji-hoon and Park Bo-young.
Kim Hee-won expressed, "My experience directing has taught me humility. When I was acting, I often felt a sense of pride in my performance. I apologize for that. However, as I worked with the writer, I realized the incredible depth and detail in their interpretations. I often thought, 'Wow, these actors are truly talented.' I felt a deep respect for the staff, who poured their passion and energy into this project. I realized that I must remain humble; directing is not something I did alone, but rather a collaborative effort with everyone involved. When Kang Full first suggested I try directing, I wondered what he saw in me. He simply said, 'You act well, so give it a shot.' This opportunity came at a time when I was already dreaming of directing and preparing for it. Even now, I feel nervous and excited, as if I’m living a dream. It’s an honor to be sitting here with the writer and the actors. I am truly happy, and I look forward to December 4th with anticipation and a bit of disbelief."
'조명가게' (Lighting Store) tells the story of a mysterious shop at the end of a dark alley that attracts customers with hidden secrets. Following the global success of '무빙' (Moving) in 2023, this series is highly anticipated as a top project for Disney+. It is based on Kang Full's webtoon of the same name, which is the fifth installment in his 'Mystery Psychological Thriller' series and has garnered over 150 million views, receiving much acclaim from readers. The series aims to expand on character narratives, with Kim Hee-won making his directorial debut after showcasing his impressive acting skills in various films and dramas, including his role as Choi Il-hwan in '무빙' (Moving).
The cast features a diverse ensemble of 11 characters, each with their own mysterious backstories, portrayed by Ju Ji-hoon, Park Bo-young, Kim Seol-hyun, Bae Sung-woo, Eom Tae-goo, Lee Jung-eun, Kim Min-ha, Park Hyuk-kwon, Kim Dae-myung, Shin Eun-soo, Kim Sun-hwa, and Kim Gi-ha, promising a seamless performance.
'조명가게' (Lighting Store) will premiere on December 4, releasing two episodes weekly over the following two weeks.
