Director Jin Chang-kyu Enthusiastic About New Drama 'Treasure Island'

Director Jin Chang-kyu has expressed his excitement for the upcoming SBS drama 'Treasure Island' (보물섬), set to premiere on February 21. The series, written by Lee Myung-hee and produced by Studio S, A2Z Entertainment, and Purumir Workshop, follows Seo Dong-joo (played by Park Hyung-sik) as he embarks on a high-stakes revenge mission against the ultimate evil that took his life, hacking into a political slush fund worth 2 trillion won. This blockbuster revenge drama is already being hailed as one of the most anticipated releases of the first half of 2025.

'Treasure Island' is notable for the collaboration between writer Lee Myung-hee, known for her work on 'Money Flower' (돈꽃), and director Jin Chang-kyu, who previously directed 'Military Prosecutor Doberman' (군검사 도베르만). The synergy between Lee's captivating storytelling, which vividly portrays human desires, and Jin's ability to maintain a trendy yet immersive direction is generating high expectations.

In discussing 'Treasure Island', Director Jin described it as a narrative about individuals fighting to claim their own treasures—be it money, love, or power. He emphasized that the drama is a comprehensive genre piece that blends elements of chaebols, politics, melodrama, and action, promising a rich and varied viewing experience rather than a typical revenge tale.

Reflecting on his first encounter with the script, Jin noted that he was drawn to its fast-paced and unpredictable structure from the very beginning. He appreciated the strong character dynamics, where individuals are driven more by their desires than by clear notions of good or evil. He also mentioned that the story subtly reflects contemporary issues in South Korea while maintaining dramatic tension throughout.

To bring this intriguing narrative to life, Jin focused on effectively conveying the complex emotions of the characters entangled in intricate relationships. He aimed to highlight their unique personalities, ensuring that the drama remains accessible and engaging for viewers through careful filming and editing. Jin believes the core message of the series is that the treasures and desires we pursue can ultimately lead to our downfall, a theme he hopes resonates with the audience.

With its dynamic pacing, unpredictable plot, and intense emotional shifts among characters driven by desire, 'Treasure Island' promises to be a must-watch. The cast, featuring powerful performances from actors like Park Hyung-sik and Heo Jun-ho (playing Yeom Jang-seon), adds to the anticipation. The first episode of 'Treasure Island' is highly awaited, showcasing the dedication and passion of everyone involved in its creation.

'Treasure Island' will air on SBS every Friday at 10 PM and Saturday at 9:50 PM, starting February 21.
