Director Hwang Dong-hyuk Expresses Fatigue Over 'Squid Game' Franchise

Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of the Netflix series Squid Game (오징어 게임), recently shared his feelings about the franchise in an interview with American media. He stated, "I’m so sick of ‘Squid Game’" during a conversation with Variety on December 19. Hwang revealed that the entire process of writing, producing, and directing the series was incredibly challenging, leading him to initially have no plans for a second season. However, the immense success of Season 1 provided him with the courage and motivation to pursue additional seasons. After completing post-production for Season 3, which is set to be released next year, Hwang plans to take an extended break.

During the filming of Season 1, Hwang reportedly experienced significant stress, even losing eight teeth due to the pressure. At a recent press conference for Season 2 held at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza in Seoul, he humorously mentioned, "I think I need to lose two more."

In his interview with Variety, Hwang expressed his exhaustion, stating, "I am very tired and fatigued." He elaborated that he feels a sense of weariness towards the constant cycle of creating and promoting content. "In some ways, I should say I’m very sick of ‘Squid Game’ because I’m tired of making something and promoting it," he said. Hwang added that he is not currently thinking about his next project and instead dreams of escaping to a deserted island for some personal freedom without any calls from Netflix.

Hwang's candid remarks have been echoed by other major American outlets, including Forbes, which highlighted the pressure he faces in creating the second season, emphasizing the weight of expectations surrounding the franchise.
