Detective Son Seok-koo and Profiler Kim Da-mi Star in Yoon Jong-bin's 'Nine Puzzle' at Disney Showcase

At the Disney Showcase held on November 21, 2024, in Singapore, actor Son Seok-koo introduced a new detective role, while Kim Da-mi transformed into a profiler in the highly anticipated drama 'Nine Puzzle,' directed by Yoon Jong-bin, who is known for featuring a female lead in this project.
The Walt Disney Company hosted the 'Disney Content Showcase - APAC 2024' at Marina Bay Sands, where original content from the Asia-Pacific region was highlighted. The showcase featured discussions with the production teams and main cast of various Disney+ Korea originals, including 'Trigger,' 'Fine,' 'Hyperknife,' 'Knock Off,' and 'Nine Puzzle.'
The highlight of the event was undoubtedly 'Nine Puzzle.' Main actors Kim Da-mi and Son Seok-koo, along with director Yoon Jong-bin, participated in a blue carpet event the day before, as well as the showcase and a press conference later that day, sharing insights about the drama.
'Nine Puzzle' is a mystery thriller that revolves around 'Ina' (played by Kim Da-mi), the only witness to an unsolved case from ten years ago, who is now a profiler. She finds herself under suspicion from detective 'Han Saem' (played by Son Seok-koo), who is determined to uncover the truth behind a series of murders that have resurfaced with puzzling clues. Following his success in 'My Liberation Notes,' Son Seok-koo reunites with Disney+ after 'Casino,' while Kim Da-mi, acclaimed for her roles in 'Itaewon Class' and 'That Summer,' takes on the role of a profiler. The project is further elevated by Yoon Jong-bin's direction, known for films like 'The Outlaws' and 'The Drug King.'
During the showcase, Kim Da-mi expressed her excitement about her character, stating, "I believe Ina has a unique profiling style. I researched profilers extensively to create something distinctive for Ina. I aimed to showcase various facets of her character."
Son Seok-koo added, "Unlike typical detectives, my character has a unique visual style that sets him apart from the usual portrayals in Korean dramas. He encounters a profiler who is even more unconventional, leading to unexpected chemistry between them. The narrative and visuals are distinct, which I believe is a strong point of the show."
Director Yoon Jong-bin shared his thoughts on the script, saying, "What intrigued me most was the unpredictability of the story. Each of the 12 episodes contains twists that keep viewers guessing. Both the profiler and the detective are unique characters that break away from traditional roles in thrillers. We aimed to create a fresh take on the genre, ensuring that the identity of the culprit remains a mystery until the end."
In the press conference, Kim Da-mi elaborated on preparing for her complex character, stating, "I initially researched the profession of a profiler, but I wanted to develop a profiling method unique to Ina. I considered how to portray her softer side in specific scenes."
Yoon Jong-bin, who previously ventured into OTT with 'Suriname,' humorously noted that he had vowed never to return to the format after that experience. However, he was drawn back in by the compelling script of 'Nine Puzzle.' He recounted, "When I read the script, I was captivated by its immersive quality and unpredictability. Even I found myself guessing wrong about the identity of the killer. The story is about chasing a serial killer, and the final reveal made perfect sense."
Son Seok-koo, who sported a beanie in the trailer, remarked on his character's unique style, saying, "I had a vague notion that detectives wouldn’t wear hats to work, but it turns out that’s not against the rules. My character has a fashion sense that you wouldn’t typically associate with detectives."
Kim Da-mi described her character as having a blend of realism and comic elements, stating, "While the story feels like it could happen in reality, it also has a cartoonish aspect. I tried to balance seriousness in solving cases with a more playful side when interacting with other characters."
Yoon Jong-bin emphasized the importance of the initial impression of the script, stating, "I focused on how to convey the story engagingly. I questioned whether the events could realistically occur, and while 'Nine Puzzle' is not entirely realistic, it occupies a space between reality and fantasy."
The chemistry between the two leads was also a topic of discussion. Kim Da-mi noted, "From the moment we met, I felt comfortable acting alongside him. We were able to share our thoughts and concerns about our characters, which made the process enjoyable." Son Seok-koo humorously added, "As I’ve turned 40, I’ve noticed that I gain weight easily. Maintaining the same weight for filming was a challenge, so the production team switched our snack table to healthy options to help me manage my weight."
In conclusion, Yoon Jong-bin expressed his hope that audiences would enjoy the final product, while Kim Da-mi encouraged viewers to look forward to the series. Son Seok-koo remarked on the unique experience of discussing their work in Singapore, stating, "This series has many differences from existing detective dramas, and I believe it has a charming side as well. So, I hope everyone is excited for it."
'Nine Puzzle' is set to premiere on Disney+ in 2025.
