Denis Villeneuve, the acclaimed director known for the 'Dune' series, has been officially announced as the director for the next installment of the James Bond franchise. Amazon MGM Studios revealed on June 26, 2025, that Villeneuve will take the helm for the upcoming chapter in the iconic spy series, expressing eagerness to start this new adventure with one of today's greatest filmmakers. Villeneuve has gained significant recognition in South Korea for his critically and commercially successful films, including 'Dune: Part 1' and 'Dune: Part 2'. His impressive filmography also includes recent re-releases of 'Incendies' (2011), 'Blade Runner 2049' (2017), and 'Arrival' (2017), showcasing his ability to navigate both art-house cinema and blockbuster filmmaking.
In response to the announcement, Villeneuve shared his excitement, stating, "I grew up watching 007 films with my father and am a passionate fan. I will honor the tradition of the series while taking on this new mission with immense responsibility." Amazon MGM Studios has been in discussions with various directors, including Edward Berger ('The Conclave'), Edgar Wright ('Baby Driver'), and Paul King ('Willy Wonka', 'Paddington'), to find the perfect fit for the project.
The upcoming film will be the 26th entry in the James Bond series, following Daniel Craig's 'No Time to Die' (2021). Potential candidates for the next James Bond include Aaron Taylor-Johnson from '28 Days Later', Paul Mescal from 'Gladiator 2', and Austin Butler from 'Dune: Part 2'. If Austin Butler is cast, he would make history as the first American actor to portray 007.
