Cristiano Ronaldo's Future: Mexico on the Horizon?

Cristiano Ronaldo's future is becoming increasingly complex as his contract with Al Nassr is set to expire this summer. Since joining the Saudi club in winter 2023, Ronaldo has maintained his impressive scoring ability, netting 98 goals. However, despite his individual success, he has not lifted a major trophy, leading to criticism, especially given his staggering €200 million salary. Over three years, Ronaldo has earned over 1 trillion won, which has fueled the scrutiny.

At 40 years old, Ronaldo still possesses the physical prowess of a player in his late 20s, with a physical age assessment of 28.9 years. While his salary is a concern, the absence of a transfer fee makes him an attractive target for clubs. His ambition to participate in the Club World Cup has sparked various rumors regarding his next move.

Reports have emerged that Al Hilal, a rival of Al Nassr, is interested in signing Ronaldo, and recently, Moroccan club Wydad AC has also shown interest. Wydad is set to compete against Manchester City, Al Ain, and Juventus in the Club World Cup, which aligns with Ronaldo's desire to participate in the tournament.

Another contender has entered the fray: Monterrey from Mexico. Monterrey is grouped with Inter Milan, River Plate, and Urawa Reds in Group E, presenting a formidable challenge. The club boasts several players with extensive European experience, including Sergio Canales, Lucas Ocampos, Jesus Corona, and Oliver Torres.

Notably, one of Spain's greatest defenders, Sergio Ramos, currently plays for Monterrey. Ramos, who shared a successful era at Real Madrid with Ronaldo, is reportedly encouraging him to join Monterrey.

On May 27, Ronaldo posted on his social media, "This chapter is over. The story? It’s still being written. Thank you to everyone," alongside a photo of himself in an Al Nassr jersey, effectively announcing his departure from the club. Although Al Nassr is reportedly preparing to offer a salary close to his current €200 million, it seems Ronaldo has decided to part ways.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino mentioned in a YouTube interview that Ronaldo could participate in the Club World Cup, as discussions with several clubs are ongoing. Ronaldo's connections span across Asia, South America, Africa, and Europe. FIFA has established a special transfer window from June 1 to June 10 for clubs participating in the Club World Cup, suggesting that Ronaldo's next destination may become clear next week.
