Court Upholds Sentence for Inmate Sending Obscene Letters to Victim
The Daegu High Court's 2nd-1 Criminal Division, presided over by Judge Kim Jeong-do, has confirmed a sentence of 1 year and 6 months in prison for an inmate, referred to as A, who sent lewd letters to a teenage victim while serving time. The court dismissed A's appeal, stating there were no significant reasons to alter the original sentence. According to court documents, A had previously been convicted in September 2022 for forcibly molesting a girl, identified as B, after threatening her with the words, 'If you don’t want to die, follow me quietly.' A was sentenced to 5 years in prison for this crime. While incarcerated at the Gyeongbuk Northern 3rd Prison in Cheongsong County, A sent a letter to B in March of last year, which included inappropriate content suggesting she could visit him and bring stockings if she did not want to see the letter. The initial trial noted A's severe intellectual disability, which affects impulse control, but emphasized that despite being imprisoned for sexual assault, A's actions in sending the obscene letters demonstrated a serious disregard for the law.
