Court Upholds EAS Airlines' Layoffs Amid Pandemic Challenges

The Seoul High Court has ruled that the layoffs of over 600 employees by EAS Airlines during the COVID-19 pandemic were not unjustified. On June 13, the court's Administrative Division 10, led by Judge Won Jong-chan, dismissed a lawsuit filed by 18 former employees challenging their dismissals. This decision follows a previous ruling that supported EAS Airlines' position. In May of last year, the first trial court acknowledged the urgent business necessity for the layoffs, citing the impact of the pandemic on travel demand and the company's ongoing financial difficulties. EAS Airlines announced its restructuring plans in late August 2020 and proceeded to lay off 605 employees in October of the same year. Some of the dismissed workers claimed their terminations were unfair and sought relief from the Seoul Regional Labor Commission, which initially sided with them in May 2021. However, the Central Labor Relations Commission later overturned this decision, leading to the administrative lawsuit.
