Court Upholds Detention of Former President Yoon Suk-yeol Amid Controversy

On July 19, 2025, the Democratic Party of Korea commented on the recent court ruling that denied former President Yoon Suk-yeol's request to cancel his detention. The party stated that the court's decision to uphold Yoon's detention as a 'leader of insurrection' aligns with public understanding and common sense. During a briefing, Democratic Party spokesperson Baek Seung-ah criticized Yoon for attempting to evade justice through legal maneuvers, stating that he has failed in his efforts to secure release. Baek urged Yoon to sincerely apologize to the public and history, emphasizing that if he continues to rely on support from the People Power Party and far-right supporters, his situation will only worsen. Furthermore, Baek called for a thorough investigation into those who conspired with Yoon in the illegal martial law and insurrection, including presidential aides, cabinet members, and military leaders. He asserted that dismantling insurrectionist forces is a promise to the people and a new beginning for South Korea, warning that failing to hold accountable those who undermine the constitution could lead to the emergence of new insurrectionist threats.
