Couple Sentenced for Extortion After False Pregnancy Claims

A couple has received suspended prison sentences and fines for attempting to extort money from a bar patron by falsely claiming that the woman was pregnant due to sexual assault. On July 29, the Ulsan District Court's Chief Judge Jo Guk-in sentenced a man in his 30s, referred to as A, to six months in prison, suspended for two years, and a woman in her 20s, referred to as B, to a fine of 5 million won.

The couple contacted a man, identified as C, who had sexual relations with B at a bar in February of last year, claiming, 'I am pregnant because you raped me. Please pay for the abortion.' When C refused to pay and avoided their calls, A and B went to his home multiple times, knocking on his door and waiting outside.

The court noted that A led the extortion attempt and had a previous conviction for attempted extortion, while B committed the crime during a suspended sentence for another fraud case. However, the court took into account that their actions did not result in actual harm and that they expressed remorse, which influenced the sentencing decision.
