Countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński Blends Opera and Breakdancing Ahead of His First Concert in Korea

Polish countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński, known for his remarkable talent in both opera and breakdancing, is set to perform in Korea for the first time on January 11 at Art Center Incheon. Orliński, 34, has gained international acclaim for his work in Baroque and classical opera, while also being a skilled B-boy and fashion model for brands like Nike and Levi's.

In a recent video interview, Orliński discussed the blending of high culture and street culture, stating, "Until about 20 years ago, genres like jazz, pop, hip-hop, and classical were clearly defined. However, today, high culture and street culture are intricately intertwined. If street artists can exhibit their work in galleries, why can't classical music do the same?" His thoughts evoke the spirit of street artist Banksy, emphasizing the evolving nature of artistic expression.

Orliński incorporates dynamic dance movements into his performances, adhering to a principle that such expressions should enhance character portrayal in opera. He explained, "If my abilities can contribute to the stage, I will showcase them without hesitation."

Born into a family of architects and artists, Orliński began singing in a boys' choir at the age of eight, initially aspiring to be a painter. Encouraged by friends, he transitioned to vocal performance, starting as a bass-baritone before discovering his affinity for the countertenor range while singing Renaissance music. He noted, "At that time, there were no famous countertenors in Poland, which led to some laughter from the audience, and I felt a bit embarrassed at first."

After studying at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, he furthered his education at The Juilliard School in the U.S. Notably, Orliński has been breakdancing since his teenage years, competing in various events. He shared, "I’ve always had a hard time staying still, whether it was climbing trees, skateboarding, or skiing. Even after an opera or concert, I often dance with friends on the streets."

When asked about injury concerns, he replied, "I am very careful, but I am drawn to the idea that to create, one must be willing to fall and break."

For his upcoming concert, he will perform Baroque pieces with the early music ensemble Il Pomo d'Oro. Orliński concluded, "For me, there is only one distinction: good music and bad music." Tickets are priced between 20,000 and 40,000 KRW.
