Correctional Officer Suspended Amid Solitary Confinement Bribery Investigation

On July 29, 2025, it was confirmed that a correctional officer involved in a bribery investigation related to solitary confinement assignments has been suspended from their position. According to reports, the Ministry of Justice took action against the officer, referred to as A, who is accused of accepting money from inmates in exchange for assigning them to single occupancy cells. On July 28, the police's Serious Crimes Investigation Unit conducted a search of the Ministry of Justice's Correctional Headquarters and the Seoul Detention Center to gather evidence related to A's case.
Investigators believe that A received millions of won from multiple inmates and facilitated their transfer from shared cells to solitary confinement. The police are also looking into whether there are any accomplices behind A. Additionally, they are conducting witness interviews with other correctional officials.
In a related development, on July 26, two brokers suspected of being involved in A's bribery scheme were arrested on charges of offering bribes. These brokers, reportedly with ties to organized crime, are accused of collecting money from inmates and passing a portion of it to A.
