Controversy Surrounds 'My Name is Ahn Eun-soo' as Unauthorized Use of Images Emerges in China

The popular Netflix series 'My Name is Ahn Eun-soo' (폭싹 속았수다), starring IU (아이유) and Park Bo-gum (박보검), is facing backlash for unauthorized image usage and illegal viewership in China. The drama, which follows the adventurous lives of Ahn Eun-soo (아이유), a spirited rebel from Jeju, and Kwan-sik (박보검), a bumbling but lovable character, premiered on March 7 and concluded its run on March 28, releasing four episodes weekly.

Despite Netflix not being officially available in China, the show has gained immense popularity, resonating with audiences through relatable family themes. Chinese viewers have resorted to various means, including VPNs and illegal downloads, to access the series, which has also been uploaded on multiple OTT platforms. The show currently boasts a high rating of 9.4 on Douban, China's largest rating site.

However, the situation escalated when unauthorized images of the characters Kwan-sik and Eun-soo were used in advertisements at a supermarket in Hebei Province. Professor Seo Kyung-duk (서경덕) from Sungshin Women's University reported that these images were exploited without permission, showcasing a scene where Kwan-sik sells cabbage alongside Eun-soo, with captions like 'Cabbage for Sale.' Other products also featured their likenesses with phrases such as 'Try making pea rice from Eun-soo's house' and 'Is this the right fish?'

Professor Seo emphasized that this incident highlights the rampant misuse of actors' likenesses following illegal viewership in China. He pointed out that this is not an isolated case, as Chinese entities have previously exploited the likenesses of K-content stars from shows like 'Squid Game' and 'The Glory,' often creating counterfeit products for profit.

He criticized the ongoing situation, stating that the lack of Netflix's official service in China does not excuse these actions, which openly acknowledge the illegal viewing practices occurring in the country. Professor Seo called for the Chinese authorities to take action against these illegal activities to prevent further exploitation of content creators' rights.
