Controversy Surrounds Celebrity List Amid Political Turmoil in South Korea
The political landscape in South Korea has become increasingly chaotic following President Yoon Suk-yeol's declaration of a state of emergency. Amid this turmoil, a so-called 'celebrity list' has emerged, sparking significant debate. Celebrities who have voiced their opinions on the current situation are being hailed as 'conscious stars,' while those who remain silent or do not express their views are facing backlash, raising concerns about the state of democracy.
On December 7, singer Lim Young-woong shared a post on his social media featuring his dog, which led to a controversy known as the 'DM controversy.' A netizen, identified as A, sent a direct message to Lim questioning his lack of engagement during the current political crisis, stating, "What are you doing in this situation?" Lim's response, which included, "Am I a politician? Why should I speak up?" was shared by A, further fueling the debate.
The situation escalated when it was suggested that A is a producer from a popular entertainment program. The producer later denied sending the message and claimed not to follow Lim's account. A subsequently deleted the posts, leading to claims that Lim Young-woong had become a victim of fake news.
Lim is not alone in facing criticism. Other celebrities, including Cha Eun-woo, have also received negative comments for their social media posts. Stars like Han So-hee, Kim Yuna, and NewJeans' Haerin, who attended luxury brand events, have also been targeted.
The criticism has extended beyond individual celebrities, with calls for prominent figures in the entertainment industry to take a stand. This includes actors Lee Byung-hun, Jung Hae-in, Song Kang-ho, Hwang Jung-min, Jung Woo-sung, Lee Sung-min, Ha Jung-woo, and Yoo Hae-jin, who have all been urged to speak out.
Supporters of this movement include notable directors and actors such as Bong Joon-ho, Kim Go-eun, and Son Ye-jin, who, along with 77 organizations and 2,518 individuals, issued a statement on December 7 demanding the impeachment and arrest of President Yoon Suk-yeol for alleged crimes against the state. They argue that other celebrities should join the nationwide candlelight vigils led by figures like Go Ah-sung.
However, there is a counterargument that not all popular celebrities are obligated to express political views. Critics argue that targeting those who choose to remain silent or do not participate in protests contradicts the principles of democracy, leading to ongoing debates about the role of celebrities in political discourse.
