Controversy Erupts as Gyeongju Mayor Calls g.o.d 'Outdated Idol'

Gyeongju Mayor Joo Nak-young has sparked controversy by referring to the popular K-pop group g.o.d as an 'outdated idol' during a recent event. On June 9, a recording for KBS2's 'Immortal Songs' special for the 2025 APEC event took place at a helicopter pad next to the Administrative Welfare Center in Gyeongju. According to audience reports, the pre-show MC attempted to energize the crowd by stating, 'Your favorite artists are listening to you from backstage,' before inviting the mayor to speak. Upon seeing g.o.d on the lineup, Mayor Joo remarked, 'g.o.d was a singer from our generation, but haven't they faded away?' This comment drew immediate backlash online, with many netizens demanding an apology. Critics labeled the remark as disrespectful, questioning the appropriateness of such a statement directed at artists present at an official event. They pointed out that g.o.d continues to sell out concerts, indicating their ongoing popularity. In response to the uproar, the mayor issued a statement expressing regret for any discomfort caused by his words, clarifying that he did not intend to belittle the group. He emphasized his fondness for g.o.d and acknowledged their active presence in the music scene. g.o.d member Park Jun-hyung also addressed the situation on Instagram, encouraging fans not to be hurt by others' words and to focus on the positive future ahead. He expressed love for the fans and urged them to avoid stress over trivial matters, stating, 'We still have greater things to come.'
