Controversy Arises Over Suspect's Treatment in Son Heung-min Extortion Case

A woman in her twenties, identified as Yang, appeared at the Seoul Central District Court on May 17 for a warrant review, facing charges of extortion against South Korean national football team captain Son Heung-min (33, Tottenham Hotspur). Yang allegedly attempted to extort money by claiming she was pregnant with Son's child. Her appearance sparked a debate online regarding her rights, as her face was largely visible to the media despite her wearing a mask. Critics questioned whether her rights were being adequately protected, given that she is not a violent criminal.
Yang attended the court session in a tracksuit, restrained by handcuffs. While she attempted to cover her face with a file, police were seen taking it away, leading to further discussions about her treatment. However, it appears that Yang chose her outfit herself, as she was dressed differently from when she was arrested, suggesting she may have changed clothes before the court appearance. The police clarified that there are no specific regulations regarding the attire of detained suspects, allowing them the opportunity to change clothes after arrest.
Additionally, Yang did not wear a hat, which was likely her own decision, as police had prepared two hats that concealed logos. In contrast, her accomplice, a man in his forties named Yong, was allowed to wear a hat at his request during the same court session.
Yang's attempt to cover her face with a file seemed to be an impulsive action, as police intervened when she tried to take the file containing court documents without permission.
Yang, who previously dated Son, is accused of sending him an ultrasound photo in June of last year, threatening to reveal her pregnancy unless he paid her over 300 million won. Police have confirmed that she underwent an abortion, and the ultrasound photo she sent was not manipulated. However, it remains unverified whether Son is the father of the aborted fetus. Son's representatives have stated that regardless of Yang's pregnancy status, the child is definitely not his.
