Controversy Arises in Vietnam Over 'Squid Game 2' Scene Referencing the Vietnam War

'Squid Game 2' has sparked controversy in Vietnam due to a scene referencing the Vietnam War. Local media reported that a dialogue between characters Dae-ho (강하늘) and Jung-bae (이서환) has drawn backlash from Vietnamese viewers. In the scene, Dae-ho mentions, "My father was a Vietnam War veteran," to which Jung-bae responds, "Your father is admirable." The Vietnam War, known locally as the '월남전', was a significant conflict that followed the Indochina War and resulted in deep scars for the Vietnamese people. During this period, South Korean troops were deployed in response to a request from the U.S., sending 320,000 soldiers to the region. This historical reference has led to accusations of historical distortion. In response, there have been calls for a boycott of 'Squid Game 2' in Vietnam, with local authorities requesting a re-evaluation of the series and demanding its removal from Netflix Vietnam. A representative from the Vietnamese film department stated that they are currently reviewing whether 'Squid Game 2' violates film laws and will take appropriate action. Meanwhile, a representative from Netflix Korea stated they have no comment on the matter.
