Conscientious Objector Under Investigation for DUI Incident

A conscientious objector serving alternative military duty has come under police investigation following a drunk driving incident. According to the Daejeon Western Police Station and Daejeon Correctional Facility, Lee (29), who was serving at the Daejeon Correctional Facility, was involved in a collision while driving at around 9 PM on May 2 in the Jeongnim Intersection area of Daejeon. After being stopped by police for a breathalyzer test, Lee was charged with drunk driving and was summoned for questioning on May 15. Reports indicate that Lee's blood alcohol concentration was at a level that would warrant a license suspension (0.08% or higher). Lee, a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses, had refused to enlist in active military service due to his religious beliefs and was fulfilling his duty in a correctional facility. The Daejeon Correctional Facility is currently considering disciplinary actions against Lee, depending on the outcome of the case. Under current military service laws, a sentence of imprisonment could result in the loss of eligibility for alternative service, which would require Lee to switch to active military duty for the remainder of his service period. The Supreme Court has previously ruled against recognizing the sincerity of conscientious objectors with a history of drunk driving offenses.
