Comedian Shim Hyung-rae Opens Up About His Divorce Despite Earning a Fortune

In an upcoming episode of MBN's 동치미 (Dongchimi) airing on May 24, comedian Shim Hyung-rae discusses the reasons behind his divorce, despite having a substantial income. The episode centers around the theme 'Why Husbands Go Out,' contrasting the perspectives of husbands who claim they go out to earn money and wives who believe their partners simply enjoy being out.

Notably, the episode features legendary comedians Lim Ha-ryong, Lee Hong-ryeol, and Shim Hyung-rae, who come together for the first time, promising a delightful mix of humor and nostalgia. The trio engages in lively discussions and revisits their classic comedy skit 'Gwigoksanjang' after nearly 30 years, showcasing their enduring chemistry.

Shim Hyung-rae maintains that his frequent absences were primarily due to his commitment to providing for his family. He explains, 'I didn’t go out just to make money, but my busy schedule with film shoots and business ventures often kept me away from home for extended periods. While most people might be away for a day or two, I was gone for three to four months at a time. This ultimately led to my divorce and my struggles with business investments.'

Reflecting on his past success, Shim reveals that he once earned a staggering income, having appeared in over 100 commercials and 118 films. He recalls, 'Back then, an apartment in Apgujeong cost around 78 million won, and I was earning 80 million won per commercial.' This revelation left the audience in awe.

As MC Kim Yong-man summarized, 'You were making enough from one commercial to buy an apartment in Apgujeong,' the studio erupted with questions about the fate of his numerous properties. Shim candidly admitted, 'I lost a significant amount of money due to several business failures,' shocking everyone with his honesty.

The revamped talk show 동치미 (Dongchimi), now hosted by Kim Yong-man, Lee Hyun-yi, and Enok, airs every Saturday night at 11 PM.
