Comedian Shim Hyung-rae Opens Up About Divorce Despite His Wealth

In an upcoming episode of MBN's 동치미 (Dongchimi), comedian Shim Hyung-rae discusses the reasons behind his divorce, despite having a substantial income. The episode, airing on May 24, centers around the theme 'Reasons Why Husbands Go Out,' showcasing the contrasting views of a husband who claims he goes out to earn money and a wife who believes he simply enjoys being out.

Notably, the episode features legendary comedians Lim Ha-ryong, Lee Hong-ryeol, and Shim Hyung-rae, who come together for the first time on screen. The trio engages in lively discussions and revisits their classic comedy skit 'Gwigoksanjang' after nearly 30 years, demonstrating their enduring chemistry.

Shim Hyung-rae maintains that his frequent absences were primarily due to his commitment to providing for his family. He explains, 'I didn’t go out just to make money, but I was often busy with film shoots and business ventures, which kept me away from home for extended periods. While most people might be away for a day or two, I would be gone for three to four months. This ultimately led to my divorce.'

He also revealed that he once earned a significant amount of money, stating, 'I appeared in over 100 commercials and 118 films during my peak. Back then, an apartment in Apgujeong cost around 78 million won, and I was earning 80 million won per project.' This revelation left the audience in awe.

As MC Kim Yong-man summarized, 'You were making enough from one commercial to buy an apartment in Apgujeong,' prompting questions about the fate of his numerous properties. Shim candidly admitted, 'I lost a lot of money due to several business failures.'
